Rifampicin is a potent hepatic enzyme (CYP450) inducer that accelerates oestrogen/progestogen metabolism and renders the COCP ineffective. Advise an additional barrier method (or switch to copper IUD/Depo-Provera), continuing barrier protection for 28 days after the drug.
