Teaching point
A competent minor (Gillick) can consent to contraception -> assess capacity and respect the young person's confidential decision, not the relative's wishes. When coercion/abuse is suspected (controlling partner, elder abuse) -> interview the patient ALONE first. Competent adults may refuse treatment -> document and respect autonomy.
